FangShi 3D Printing Offset Skewb 2x2x2 Plus Cube Hyper V

FangShi Hyper V is a hybrid of a 2x2 cube and an offset-cut skewb (Offset Skewb Plus), the mechanism known from the Master Skewb. You can turn it in two ways: rotate the faces like a regular 2x2, or turn the corners like a skewb. The puzzle belongs to FangShi's limCube series and is 3D printed, so it is aimed mainly at collectors and anyone looking for an unusual puzzle rather than another cube for timed solves.

Where the name Hyper V comes from

You can think of the Hyper V as a combination of a Master Skewb and a 2x2 cube in which part of the skewb mechanism has been blocked. Only half of the corners have skewb cuts, which leaves "half an X", hence the letter V in the name. In practice, the puzzle looks like a 4x4 in which some of the corners have been replaced with skewb pieces. Each of these corners works like a separate little skewb.

How it turns

The pieces are made with FDM 3D printing, so don't expect the smoothness of a factory injection-moulded cube. The turning feels noticeably rough, catching happens, and turns require careful alignment of the layers. The Hyper V is not suitable for speedcubing and shouldn't be judged as a speed cube. It is a puzzle for relaxed solving, where the challenge comes from combining two types of moves, not from speed.

Who is it for?

For cubers who already know the 2x2 and the skewb (ideally the Master Skewb too) and want to see how these two mechanisms work together. It is a great fit for a collection of modified and 3D-printed puzzles. For a first puzzle, or as a gift for a child who is just starting out, a regular skewb or a 2x2 cube is a better choice.
