At first glance, it looks like an ordinary skewb. The difference becomes clear after just a few moves. The FangShi Fission Skewb, also sold as the LimCube Fission Skewb, turns like a classic skewb, but it also has edges that you can turn independently of the rest of the puzzle. This skewb shape mod combines a skewb with a curvy-type mechanism that turns around the edges. Once scrambled, it loses its cube shape.

How the Fission Skewb works

The puzzle has two types of moves: regular skewb turns around the corners and turns around the edges. You can mix both types freely. Just stop a skewb turn halfway, at 60 degrees, and make an edge turn in that position. This changes the shape of the puzzle, and the pieces start to jumble. After only a few moves, the cube turns into an irregular shape.

Difficulty level

This puzzle is harder than a standard skewb and simpler skewb shape mods. Still, it is far from the puzzles considered nearly impossible. It will be easiest for those who already know a skewb method and want to take on a completely new type of move. If you don't know the regular skewb, you will spend a lot of effort just understanding the mechanism.

Who is it for?

The Fission Skewb is a great choice for collectors of shape-shifting puzzles and for cubers who have grown bored with the regular skewb. This is not a speedcubing puzzle. It has no magnets, and the fun lies in figuring out the mechanism, not in fast turning. For a child's first puzzle, it's better to choose a regular skewb and save the Fission for later.
