FanXin 4x4x4 Axis Cube

The FanXin 4x4x4 Axis Cube is the 4x4 version of the popular Axis Cube. You solve it the same way as a regular 4x4x4 cube, but the cuts are shifted. Once scrambled, the cube loses its cubic shape and turns into an irregular solid, with pieces of different shapes and sizes. This shape mod comes in the stickerless bright version, which means it is made of coloured plastic with no stickers.

Where is the challenge? You already know the algorithms from a regular 4x4: you build the centers, pair the edges, then solve the cube like a 3x3 and fix the parity. The hardest part is recognizing the pieces. It takes quite a bit of work to figure out which piece of the Axis corresponds to which piece of a regular 4x4. The centers matter here because their orientation is visible, so matching colors as on a regular 4x4 is not enough. A single mistake in a parity algorithm can really mess things up, because with the changed shape it is harder to quickly get back to the previous state.

Mechanism and turning. The Axis has the same internal mechanism as FanXin's other 4x4 shape mods. It is a simple design without magnets or other extras that improve performance in speedcubes. The edges of the pieces are rounded, which helps with corner cutting. Turning is relatively light and smooth, with no catching, as long as the layers are properly aligned. When a layer is clearly misaligned or you push a piece at an odd angle, the cube stops. According to users, it is light and feels a little loose. Reviewers rate the mechanism well for this price range. There are also some remarks about the finish, for example excess plastic (flash) on the edges.

Who is it for? For someone who can already solve a 4x4x4 and is looking for some variety. It is also a good choice for anyone who has solved the 3x3 Axis Cube and wants a harder version. We do not recommend it as your first 4x4 to learn on: without knowing the reduction method and parity, the Axis 4x4 will be more frustrating than fun. The cube is not allowed in official WCA competitions; it is a puzzle for hobby solving and for your collection.
