FanXin 4x4x4 Windmill

The FanXin 4x4x4 Windmill is the 4x4 version of the classic Windmill, a shape mod from FanXin's puzzle range. The cuts are offset compared to a regular cube, so after just a few moves the Windmill loses its cube shape. The pieces come in different shapes and sizes, which makes it harder to tell where each one belongs. This cube comes in the Stickerless Bright version, made of coloured plastic with no stickers.

How to solve the 4x4 Windmill

Algorithm-wise, it is still a 4x4: you solve it with the same methods as a classic 4x4 cube, parity included. The challenge is that its shape changes. You have to learn to recognise pieces by their shape, not just their colour, and a scrambled puzzle looks completely different from a regular cube. That is why you should already be able to solve a 4x4, and ideally know the 3x3 Windmill too.

Mechanism and turning

Inside, it uses the same mechanism as FanXin's other 4x4 shape mods. It is a simple design without magnets, MagLev, Ball-Core or UV coating. The edges of the pieces are rounded, which helps with corner cutting when the layers are not perfectly aligned. The cube turns fairly light and smooth, with no noticeable lockups. You can change the tension with the adjustment screws. Some buyers report that turning is dry out of the box and catching may occur, but lubing improves it noticeably. The plastic is light, and some pieces are hollow inside. This is not a cube for breaking records, but a solid puzzle at a low price.

Who is it for?

For anyone who can already solve a 4x4 and wants to try something different from standard cubes. It also fits well into a shape mod collection alongside other FanXin 4x4 puzzles such as the Axis, Fisher, Mastermorphix or Pyraminx 4x4. For a child's first cube, a regular 3x3 is a better choice. The FanXin Windmill 4x4 is not approved for official WCA competitions.
