FanXin UFO Cube

FanXin UFO Cube is a shape mod puzzle built on a 3x3 mechanism and shaped like a flying saucer. It turns just like a regular 3x3 cube, but the body is a rounded disc. After a few moves it loses its shape and turns into a rather chaotic form. This FanXin model revisits the UFO idea that other manufacturers have used before. We stock it in black (Black).

How to solve it

If you can solve a 3x3 cube, you already know the algorithms you need for the UFO. The difficulty comes from the shape. The pieces differ in size and form, so you have to learn to recognize and track them all over again. On top of that, there is the orientation of the centers in the middle layer, which you can't see on a regular cube. At the end of a solve you may find that everything is in place except one center, which is rotated. It's worth knowing an algorithm to fix it.

According to customer reviews, the mechanism is quiet and soft, and the puzzle is well fitted. Keep in mind, though, that the flat sides make it harder to feel the horizontal axes of rotation. The layers need to be precisely aligned before you can turn them. Corner cutting is limited, and the puzzle is meant for relaxed solving, not for setting times.

Finish and size

The surface is matte (frosted) and doesn't slip in your hands. The puzzle is approx. 99 mm in diameter, so it is noticeably larger than a standard 3x3. It sits comfortably in a large hand, but people with smaller hands, especially children, may need a moment to get used to it.

Who is it for?

It's a good choice if you can already solve a 3x3 and want to try something different without learning a completely new mechanism. It also fits nicely into a shape mod collection, as its shape stands out on the shelf. It's not really suitable as a first puzzle for someone who doesn't yet know a 3x3 method. It's better to master the classic cube first.
