GAN 12 ui Maglev V2 UV 3x3

This is a smart cube from GAN, a 3x3 cube with Bluetooth. It records every move and sends it to the CubeStation app. GAN 12 ui Maglev V2 UV uses the GAN12 Maglev mechanism. Unlike the older GAN12 ui FreePlay, it has no springs. Instead it uses the MagLev system: ring-shaped repelling magnets act as springs, which means less friction and less noise. The UV version has a glossy coating with strong grip. Colour scheme: stickerless bright.

How it turns

The cube is light and very fast. In your hand it feels like a regular GAN12 Maglev, and you can barely tell the electronics are there. According to reviews, turning is smooth. Corner cutting exceeds 45°, and reverse corner cutting reaches roughly line-to-line on most settings. It does have auto-alignment, but it is gentler than in cubes that strongly snap layers into place. Straight out of the box, the cube can feel loose, sandy and a bit crunchy. If you prefer a more controllable feel, add a slower lube. Lube it sparingly, though, because some users had temporary connection problems after lubing.

Adjustment and mechanism

• Magnetic GES v2 (MagLev): magnets instead of springs on the axes.
• GTN numerical system with 3 tension levels.
• Interchangeable magnetic strips (GMS v3) in stronger and weaker versions. According to the manufacturer, all settings together give 216 combinations.
• Magnetic core (Omnidirectional Core Smart Ball Shaft 2.0): magnets in the core work with the corners to stabilise the layers.

After every change to the mechanical settings, reset the cube in the CubeStation app so that the virtual state matches the physical one.

Smart features

Once connected to your phone via Bluetooth, the CubeStation app tracks your solves, collects statistics and shows how long each stage took, e.g. cross or F2L. There are also training modes and online 1v1 battles. According to the manufacturer, the battery lasts for about 15 hours of solving.

Who is it for?

This cube makes the most sense for cubers who want to train with solve analysis on a flagship-class mechanism rather than the compromise typical of smart cubes. It is the previous generation of the flagship ui series. GAN's current top model is the GAN16 ui Maglev MAX. If a child is just learning to solve, a cheaper magnetic cube is enough. The ui Maglev version is for you if you want both a fast, widely adjustable mechanism and a training app.
