GAN 17 MagDrive UV 3x3

The biggest change in the GAN 17 MagDrive UV 3x3 is how the magnets guide the layer. In a typical magnetic speed cube, the magnets only kick in at the end of the turn, and you feel a single click. Here, the MagDrive system works throughout the entire 90° turn, from the start of the move all the way to full alignment. This is GAN's flagship 3x3 for 2026, in a stickerless version with a factory UV coating.

How MagDrive works in the GAN 17

GAN calls this setup the Celestial Magnetic-Dynamic System. It is made up of 196 magnets placed in the core, the pieces and the tracks. It's not about stronger corner-edge magnets, but about several magnetic systems working together:

• from 0° to 45°, the layer is pulled back towards the axis,
• from 45° to 90°, the magnets pull it into full alignment.

Everything is built around a 17.5 mm magnetic micro core and a Ball-Core with 20 magnets. The smaller core leaves room for a denser network of magnets, and the corner-core magnets straighten the layers after fast turns, even from a large angle. The springs have been replaced with repelling MagLev magnets. Without spring friction, the start of each move is lighter and more linear, turning is quieter, and there are no spring-induced lockups.

Feel and speed

According to user feedback, the GAN 17 is slower and more controllable than the GAN 16, and the auto-alignment is very noticeable, as the layers snap into place on their own. Some people also find it heavier in the hand than the GAN 15 and 16. The cube responds clearly to lube, and some reviewers got more control after fitting stronger corner rods. Magnetic guidance throughout the whole turn doesn't suit everyone right away, so it's best not to judge the cube by your first few solves.

Adjustment

• 6 levels of center travel and 12 levels of magnetic tension, giving 72 numbered settings that are easy to return to,
• interchangeable magnetic corner rods in three strengths: strong, medium and light,
• removable edge rods that let you turn extra repulsion on or off.

UV finish and construction

The UV coating gives a glossy, grippy surface that helps with sweaty hands and resists micro-scratches better. The pieces are hollow, and the contact surfaces feature a honeycomb pattern that holds lube and spreads it evenly.

Who is the GAN 17 MagDrive UV for?

This cube is mainly for advanced speedcubers who want to try a new type of magnetic guidance and enjoy fine-tuning their setup. At high TPS, it focuses on stability and strong auto-alignment rather than maximum speed. If you prefer a lighter, faster cube, you may feel more at home with the GAN 16 MagLev Max. The GAN 17 has 196 magnets compared to 136 in the GAN 16 MagLev Max, making it currently one of the most heavily magnetized 3x3 cubes in GAN's lineup.
