GAN 249 v2 2x2x2

After its successful flagship 3x3 cubes, GAN turned to the 2x2. GAN 249 v2 2x2x2 is the improved version of this cube. The first version was withdrawn from production fairly quickly because the designers decided its internal construction needed changes. The second generation has a redesigned interior, a brighter stickerless colour scheme and a new core with tension adjustment. It is a non-magnetic cube with a size of 49 mm.

What changed in v2

The internal pieces are no longer made of black plastic. Their contact surfaces have a honeycomb-like texture (Honeycomb Design). This helps the lube spread better across the pieces and stay in place longer, and the turning feels smoother. The corner edges are rounded off, so the cube doesn't rub against your fingers during fast solves. Inside there is a cross-shaped IPG core, which was a new solution in 2x2 cubes at the time. You set the tension with GES nuts using the key included in the set.

How it turns

The cube is light and fast, yet still controllable. Corner cutting is good, and according to the manufacturer, the cube cuts corners even when a layer is offset by 45 degrees. User opinions are divided, though. Some people quickly set new personal bests on it, while others complain about lockups, especially with the factory setup and without lube. Tension adjustment and a little lube usually make a big difference. At 49 mm, it is smaller than many newer 2x2 cubes, so people with larger hands may find it too small.

Who is it for?

GAN 249 v2 is a sensible choice for a first proper 2x2 cube if you want to learn to solve on real speedcubing hardware instead of a toy cube. It also works well as a light 2x2 for competitions. If you want a cube that settles the layers into place by itself, choose a magnetic version or a newer, larger model.
