GAN 251 V2 2x2x2

Lightweight, non-magnetic and with very good corner cutting. The GAN 251 V2 2x2x2 is the successor to the GAN 249 V2. It has a larger body, weighs only 47 g and, according to the manufacturer, turns more smoothly than its predecessor. This 2x2 cube was released in 2022. It features frosted plastic and a stickerless bright colour scheme.

How does a non-magnetic 2x2 cube perform?

Turning is light and fairly loose, even on the tighter tension setting. Even so, reviews describe the cube as stable, with lockups and pops being rare. Corner cutting is very good. On both settings the cube cuts well beyond 45 degrees, so it handles imprecise turns well. The sound is lower and more muted than on many other 2x2 cubes.

Without magnets, the layers don't snap into place on their own. On a 2x2 this matters less than on bigger cubes, because your fingers hold a large part of the cube, making it easier to control. A reviewer who compared it with a magnetic 2x2 didn't notice a big difference in times. However, if you're used to the distinct "click" of magnets, you may find the V2 too loose.

Tension adjustment

Tension is adjusted with the GES+ system using the tool included in the set. In practice there are two settings, marked 0.6 and 0.8. Don't set the nuts to zero, or the cube will fall apart.

GAN 251 V2 or the GAN 251 M series?

The cubes in the GAN 251 M series are magnetic. The M Air has magnets in the corners but no magnets in the core. The Pro adds a magnetic core and magnet strength adjustment, and the Leap also adds auto-alignment. They weigh between 50 and 58 g, and their magnets help align the layers. The V2 has a simpler design. It's the choice for those who prefer a lightweight cube without magnets or don't need extensive adjustment options.

Who is it for?

The V2 is a good first 2x2 cube for beginners or kids: it's light, turns easily and forgives imprecise moves.
