GAN 356 Maglev UV 3x3

The 356 series is one of GAN's best-known cube lines. The GAN 356 Maglev UV is its late-2023 version. Instead of springs it uses MagLev, and on the outside it has a glossy UV coating. The mechanism and two-way adjustment match current GAN cubes, but this model is simpler than the flagships: it has no magnet strength adjustment and no Ball-Core. This 3x3 magnetic cube comes in a stickerless bright version.

How it turns

Reviewers describe the 356 Maglev as fast, but not extremely so. The magnets are medium strength, and the auto-alignment is clearly noticeable. Some people point out that the turning feels slightly "heavier" than in GAN's newer, lighter designs, and that the cube is a little flexible. Users mainly praise its corner cutting and its stability right out of the box. If you like the very light, aggressive feel of the latest flagships, you may find it calmer. If you prefer control during fast turning, it will probably suit you well.

MagLev, magnets and adjustment

• MagLev. The springs have been replaced with repelling magnets. As a result, there is no metallic spring noise, and the layers move more "cleanly".
• 76 magnets. In addition to the classic capsule magnets in the edges and corners, there are also magnets between the corners and the core (Enhanced Core Positioning 3.0). The cube aligns the layers on its own when they are off by up to approx. 30°.
• GES V2 with dual adjustment. You get 6 tension levels and 6 center travel levels, giving 36 setting combinations.
• Honeycomb texture on the contact surfaces of the pieces. This structure helps the cube hold lube for longer.
• The magnet strength cannot be adjusted.

UV or Frosted?

The mechanism is the same in both versions. The UV version has a smooth, glossy coating with a stronger grip and, according to GAN, is about one gram heavier than the matte Frosted version. Most users praise the UV coating, although a few say it can get slippery with sweaty hands.

Who is it for?

For anyone who wants GAN's MagLev and adjustable GES but doesn't need the magnet adjustment or Ball-Core found in more expensive models. The cube works well for a cuber moving up from their first magnetic cube, as well as for a more experienced speedcuber who likes the stable, predictable feel of the 356 series.
