GAN 460M 4x4x4

GAN 460M 4x4x4 is GAN's first magnetic 4x4 cube. It was released in 2018 and expectations were high, because at the time GAN was known mainly for its excellent 3x3 cubes. This product is the first generation of the model. Don't confuse it with the newer GAN 460M V2, which has a different design and a different magnet layout.

How it turns

The outer layers turn lightly and fairly fast, with a rather crunchy feel. Many people compare them to a 3x3 cube. The inner layers are a different story. Out of the box the cube feels tight, and you notice it most on slice moves. When solving a 4x4 you turn both outer and inner layers, so this difference gets in the way.

Despite the magnets, the cube can overshoot. Pieces travel further than they should, which misaligns the layers and causes mistakes in your solve. User reviews also often mention lockups and popping. For fast competitive solving, we consider this a serious drawback.

Magnets, core and GES tension adjustment

GAN used its GMC (GAN Magnet Capsule) system here. 96 magnets sit in visible capsules clipped into the pieces rather than being glued in by hand. Inside is an IPG core made of metal and plastic, based on the design used in GAN 3x3 cubes.

Tension adjustment uses GES nuts instead of the screw-based cross core typical of 4x4 cubes. You change the tensioning by swapping the nuts, just like on GAN 3x3 cubes. The problem is that to reach the adjustment screws, you have to remove 24 tiles, so every change of settings takes quite a lot of time.

Who is it for?

This is more of a model for collectors or for anyone who wants to try GAN's first 4x4 cube. If you want to practise 4x4 for time, you're better off choosing a newer magnetic 4x4 cube with standard screw adjustment. It will be more stable and easier to set up. The cube is approved for official competitions.
