KungFu Gear Cube V1 is a 3x3 Gear Cube puzzle. It looks like a regular cube, but the layers are connected by gears, so turning one face also moves the middle layer. It was released in 2019. In our shop it is available in the stickerless bright colour scheme, made of coloured plastic with no stickers that could wear off or peel.

How the Gear Cube works

On a classic 3x3, each face turns independently of the rest. Here it's different. The outer layer and the middle layer are linked by a gear mechanism, so they turn together, with the middle layer moving more slowly than the face. The cube only reaches a proper position after the face is turned 180 degrees. The edges are shaped like gears and rotate around their own axis as you turn. That's why, besides placing the pieces in the right spots, you also need to make sure the gears are correctly oriented.

The Gear Cube requires a different way of thinking than a standard 3x3. Knowing 3x3 methods helps a little, but it's not enough. That's why a solving guide is included to help you get started.

Turning and adjustment

This puzzle turns lightly and smoothly, and the gears mesh well without noticeable catching. This matters, because cheaper Gear Cubes often suffer from catching in the gear mechanism. You can fine-tune the mechanism with the adjustment screws. If the cube feels too tight or too loose, simply tighten or loosen the screws.

The Gear Cube isn't meant for breaking speed records. It's a puzzle for those who want to take on something different from yet another NxN cube. It also makes an interesting addition to any collection.

Who is it for?

For those who can already solve a 3x3 and are looking for a new puzzle with an interesting mechanism. It also makes a great gift for a child or teenager who loves cubes. The gear mechanism is visible right away and usually makes you want to start turning. The Gear Cube is not a WCA event, so this cube can't be used at official competitions.
