LanLan 2x2 Dodecahedron

LanLan 2x2 Dodecahedron is a puzzle that looks like a megaminx but has an ordinary 2x2 mechanism inside. LanLan changed only the outer shape: each of the 8 pieces is one eighth of a dodecahedron, so the solved puzzle is a 12-sided solid. It belongs to the shape mod family, puzzles that change shape as you turn them, and it is one of several such modifications in LanLan's range.

What happens after the first move

The turning axes of a dodecahedron are not symmetrical the way they are in a cube. That is why the puzzle loses its shape after just one 90-degree turn, and after a few moves it becomes an irregular, angular form. This is what sets it apart from a regular 2x2 cube. The face colors are the same as on a megaminx, which makes it harder to recognize where each piece should go.

How to solve it

If you can solve a 2x2, you can solve this puzzle too, because it uses the same methods and algorithms. The hardest part is getting used to the shape and the unusual color scheme. At some point the shape itself hints whether the pieces are already in place. It is a good way to check how well you really understand the 2x2, rather than just repeating algorithms from memory.

The pieces are large, and the mechanism is simple and has no magnets. Turning is noticeably heavier than on modern speedcubing 2x2 cubes, but it does not get in the way of solving. You can adjust the resistance with the tension adjustment screws. This is a puzzle for your collection and for solving just for fun, not for setting records. It is also not allowed in official WCA competitions.

For people who can already solve a 2x2 or 3x3 and want to try something different. It is also a great pick for shape mod collectors. If you are just starting out and don't know any solving method yet, it is better to get a classic 2x2 cube first.
