LanLan 4x4 Octahedron

LanLan 4x4 Octahedron is a 4x4 shape mod in the form of an octahedron. Inside it uses a regular 4x4 mechanism, so the moves are exactly the same as on a 4x4 cube. Only the outer shape of the pieces changes. The six vertices of the octahedron correspond to the faces of the 4x4 cube, and the triangular faces of the puzzle sit where the cube's corners are. As a result, the scrambled puzzle looks completely different from a cube, and familiar patterns are harder to recognize.

How it differs from a regular 4x4

If you can solve a 4x4 with the reduction method, you have a good starting point. Algorithms alone are not enough, though. The pieces look different than on a cube and are harder to match up, so you need to do a lot of thinking and plan your next steps. Users agree that the Octahedron is noticeably harder than a standard 4x4. There are also situations where it is difficult to finish the solve without additional algorithms. You buy this puzzle for an unusual challenge, not for fast times.

Mechanism and turning

Buyers describe the turning as smooth and praise the solid build right out of the box. However, it is a design from 2015 based on an older type of mechanism, so there is practically no corner cutting. You need to align the layers precisely, otherwise lockups occur. During a relaxed solve this does not matter much, but anyone used to modern speedcubing cubes will notice it right away. Tension is adjusted with the adjustment screws.

Who is it for?

For those who can already solve a 4x4 and want to try something more difficult, and for collectors of unusual puzzles. It also looks great on a shelf next to other shape mods. As a first puzzle, or for someone who does not yet know the 4x4, it will most likely be too difficult. It is not allowed in official competitions.
