LanLan Edge Turning Octahedron is an octahedron designed by Eitan Cher in which you turn the edges instead of the faces. The mechanism is similar to the Curvy Copter III, and jumbling makes the puzzle change shape, so it's a challenge for experienced cubers rather than a beginner's puzzle. Dimensions 73 x 73 x 61 mm, weight approx. 132 g, black version with stickers.
LanLan Edge Turning Octahedron is an octahedron-shaped puzzle designed by Eitan Cher. You don't turn faces or corners here, only edges: the layers rotate around axes that pass through the centers of the puzzle's edges. The mechanism is similar to the Curvy Copter III. The puzzle jumbles, so after some moves the octahedron loses its shape, and getting it back can be tricky. This version has a black body with stickers.
A regular move is a 180° edge turn, after which the puzzle is still an octahedron. The challenge begins with jumbling moves, which are turns by a partial angle. These move some pieces into different orbits, and the shape of the puzzle changes noticeably. Because of this, solving it takes more planning than typical face-turning puzzles. If you have solved a Helicopter or Curvy Copter, you will notice many similarities, especially when solving the small triangular edge pieces.
According to user reviews, turning is smooth, the puzzle is somewhat forgiving with corner cutting, and popping is very rare. Jumbling moves shouldn't cause pieces to catch or rub. Straight out of the box the puzzle can feel stiff. The tension is adjustable, though, so it's worth setting it up to your liking right away. The stickers are fairly delicate and may wear off with frequent solving.
For cubers who have already tackled the Pyraminx, Skewb or Megaminx and are looking for something less typical. As a first puzzle beyond the 3x3 cube, the Edge Turning Octahedron will likely be too difficult. It is a better fit for collectors and anyone who enjoys shape-shifting jumbling puzzles. The puzzle is compact and sits comfortably in the hand, so it's easy to take with you.
