LanLan Gear Hexagonal Prism

LanLan Gear Hexagonal Prism is a 3x3 Gear Cube reshaped into a prism with a hexagonal base. Inside, it uses the same gear mechanism as the classic Gear Cube. Only the outer shape changes, which gives the puzzle a different look and takes some getting used to. LanLan released it at the end of 2020. We stock the version with a black body.

How a Gear puzzle works

On a regular 3x3 cube, turning a face moves only that layer. On a Gear Cube, the pieces mesh like gears, so turning a face also moves the middle layer. As a result, the move sequences and the way you think about solving are different from a standard 3x3. Knowing a 3x3 method helps, but it isn't enough to solve a Gear Cube straight away.

What the prism shape changes

The mechanism stays the same, but the faces have different shapes and proportions. Once the layers are turned, it's harder to quickly see which pieces belong together and how they should return to their places. If you already know the regular Gear Cube, this model is a natural next step. If this is your first gear puzzle, it's easier to start with the classic Gear Cube, or be ready for a longer learning curve.

The puzzle has no magnets and is not allowed in official WCA competitions. It's more of a collector's puzzle for solving just for fun than a cube for chasing times. At about 66 mm it sits comfortably in your hand, and at 179 g it's noticeably heavier than a typical 3x3 speed cube.

For people who can already solve a 3x3 and want to try a different type of mechanism, and for collectors of shape mods and LanLan puzzles. It also makes a great gift for someone who already has a few cubes and is looking for something less obvious.
