Lanlan Gear Megaminx

Lanlan Gear Megaminx

Lanlan Gear Megaminx looks like a classic megaminx, but it solves completely differently. Inside there is no megaminx mechanism. Instead, it has a Gear Cube mechanism. It is a Gear Cube shape mod in the form of a regular dodecahedron, also sold as Gear Dodecahedron and Gear Minx II. The version available in our shop has a black body.

A megaminx in looks only

If you are expecting a megaminx with gears, you may be surprised. The faces don't turn like on a megaminx, and the whole puzzle works like a regular Gear Cube. The gears link the outer layers with the middle layer, so turning one side also moves the pieces next to it. However, the dodecahedral shape makes it harder to see where everything has ended up after scrambling. Because of this, your first attempt can be more confusing than with a regular Gear Cube.

Difficulty and solving

If you have already solved a Gear Cube, you will quickly find your way here. The corners almost solve themselves, and a few moves are enough to place them. Rotating the centers takes more work. Without knowing the Gear Cube, reaching the solution will take longer, but it is still not a top-tier difficulty puzzle. The mechanism turns smoothly and causes no problems at a normal solving pace. This is a puzzle for fun and for your collection, not for setting times.

Who is it for?

Above all, for puzzle collectors and Gear puzzle fans who want this mechanism in an unusual shape in their collection. It also makes a great gift for someone who already solves 3x3 cubes and is looking for something other than yet another speedcube. Gear Megaminx is not an official WCA event, so if you want to practice megaminx for competitions, choose a standard megaminx.
