LanLan Master Skewb

LanLan Master Skewb is an extended version of the classic Skewb. It is cube-shaped and, just like the Skewb, turns around its corners. However, the cuts are further divided, so the puzzle has many more pieces. It is often compared to the Skewb the same way a 4x4 is compared to a 3x3: the principle is similar, but the puzzle is bigger and harder. The puzzle was designed by Katsuhiko Okamoto, and LanLan is one of the few companies that mass-produce it.

How this Skewb works

Each corner can be turned in two ways. A shallow turn moves only the pieces next to the corner, similar to a Dino Cube. A deep turn works like a move on a regular Skewb. So when solving it, it helps to know both puzzles. Solvers often start with the Skewb-type corners and the centers, and then move on to the remaining pieces. Solving the Master Skewb takes much longer than solving a regular Skewb, and making patterns is harder too.

Turning and mechanism

This puzzle is not designed for speedsolving, and you should know this before buying it. The mechanism turns smoothly, but the pieces have sharp angles, so lockups happen from time to time. Corner cutting is very limited. According to user reviews, the puzzle can feel stiff out of the box because it is not lubed at the factory. It usually breaks in after some solving, and lube improves the turning even further. It is best to turn it calmly and precisely, without forcing the layers. You can change the tension with the adjustment screws.

Who is it for?

For people who can already solve the Skewb and want a harder challenge, and for puzzle collectors. The Master Skewb is not an official WCA event, so it is not suitable as competition gear. As a child's first puzzle, a regular Skewb is a better choice, because the Master Skewb may discourage someone who is just starting out.
