LanLan Rex Cube

LanLan Rex is a cube-shaped puzzle whose layers turn around the corners rather than around the face centers. In this respect it resembles the Skewb, but it has shallower, curved cuts. As a result, each face has more pieces, and solving it calls for a different approach. Other manufacturers also sell this type of puzzle under the name Super Ivy Cube.

How it turns

Turning is stable. While solving, however, you may occasionally feel some catching, and corner cutting is limited. The puzzle does not forgive turns when the layers are not properly aligned, so it is better to turn calmly and line up the layers carefully. Popping can also happen, which is typical for this design. Pieces that pop out can usually be put back in by hand. The plastic is smooth, and the puzzle feels solid overall. This is a puzzle for relaxed solving, not for chasing fast times.

Is the Rex hard?

It looks intimidating, but most of it can be solved intuitively. If you already know the Ivy Cube or the Skewb, you will quickly get the idea. For the last pieces, you basically need just one short algorithm, a 3-cycle, combined with setup moves. Before you start, it is worth memorizing the color order around one corner and the pairs of opposite faces. This makes it easier to put the centers in the right places.

Who is it for?

The LanLan Rex is a good choice if you have already mastered the 3x3 cube and the Skewb and want to try something new from the family of corner-turning puzzles. It is also an interesting addition to a collection. The Rex Cube is not a WCA event, so it is not a puzzle you buy with official competitions in mind.
