Lee 2x2 Axis Cube is a shapeshifting 2x2 cube with 3D-printed pieces mounted on a standard 2x2 mechanism. You solve it with familiar 2x2 algorithms, but once scrambled it loses its cubic shape, making it harder to recognize where each piece belongs. Black body, size approx. 58 mm.
Lee 2x2 Axis Cube is a shapeshifting 2x2 cube, also known as a shape mod. Underneath it runs a standard 2x2 mechanism, fitted with 3D-printed outer pieces cut in the style of the Axis Cube. You solve it exactly like a classic 2x2, but after just a few moves the cube loses its cubic shape and the pieces start to look completely different from those on a regular cube. The available variant has a black body with stickers.
Mechanically, it's still a 2x2. The layers turn the same way, so the algorithms you already know are enough, e.g. from the layer-by-layer method or Ortega. The challenge lies in the shape. Once scrambled, it's harder to tell which corner is which and how it's oriented. On top of that, the pieces differ in size, so it's easy to get lost during your first few solves. Matching the colors alone isn't enough – you also have to match the geometry of the pieces. According to distributors' descriptions, some of the corners share the same shape, so the cube can look like a cube and still not be solved.
This is not a speedcubing cube. The 3D-printed pieces and the mechanism without magnets are designed for relaxed, recreational solving, not for high TPS and breaking records.
The same Lee series also includes the Fisher and Windmill in 2x2 versions. The Fisher 2x2 changes shape fairly gently and solves almost like a regular 2x2. The Axis deforms the cube much more while scrambling, so it's a better choice if you found the Fisher too easy.
For anyone who can already solve a 2x2 or 3x3 cube and wants to try a puzzle that tests piece recognition more than algorithm knowledge. It will also appeal to collectors of shapeshifting cubes. For a first cube, a classic magnetic 2x2 is a better choice. The Axis makes the most sense once you've mastered the basics.
