Lee 2x2 Fisher Ghost Cube

Lee 2x2 Fisher Ghost Cube is a shape mod built on a regular 2x2 cube. 3D-printed caps have been added to the pieces of the standard mechanism. When solved, the cube has a shape similar to the classic Fisher Cube. Colour won't help you solve it, because the whole puzzle is a single colour (Black/silver variant). Only the shape matters: the cube is solved only when all the pieces come back together into a cuboid.

How it works

The mechanism and the moves are the same as on a 2x2 cube. Every layer turns normally, but after the very first turn the puzzle loses its regular shape. The caps come in different sizes, so the pieces differ from one another and you have to recognise them by their shape. The hardest part is working out where a given piece should go and how it should be oriented.

If you can solve a regular 2x2, you can handle this cube too. The algorithms stay the same; only the way you read the cube changes. It's a good next step after your first mirror cube or a regular Fisher, before moving on to bigger ghost cubes.

Ghost, Fisher and Mirror: what's the difference

• Mirror 2x2: the pieces have different thicknesses, but the cube keeps simple block shapes.
• Fisher 2x2: the cuts are rotated relative to a standard cube. The shape changes, but the colours usually still help.
• Ghost Fisher 2x2: combines the Fisher shape with the ghost cube principle. The pieces are irregular and the colour gives no clue at all, so recognition is harder than with either of the previous types.

Who is it for?

This puzzle is for people who already know the basics of the 2x2 and want something different from yet another timed solve. The cube also works well as part of a shape mod collection. For a child's first cube, a regular 2x2 or 3x3 is a better choice. Without knowing a solving method, the Ghost Fisher can quickly become discouraging.
