Lee 2x2 Windmill Cube

Lee 2x2 Windmill Cube is a shape mod built on a regular 2x2 cube. Lee glues 3D-printed add-ons onto its pieces, so the whole puzzle looks like a classic Windmill Cube. Inside, it still runs on a 2x2 mechanism, so you solve it just like a regular 2x2. The difference is that once scrambled, it loses its cube shape and turns into an irregular form.

How to solve it

If you can solve a 2x2, you already know all the algorithms you need. The challenge lies elsewhere. The add-ons come in different sizes, so while solving you have to look at the shape of the pieces, not just their position. A piece can be in the right place but twisted the wrong way, and then the puzzle won't return to its cube shape. This kind of challenge works well as a break from the regular 2x2 and as a first step into shape mods.

This is a puzzle for casual solving and for your collection, not a cube for setting speed records. Because of the add-ons, it is larger and feels heavier in the hand than a standard 2x2, so don't compare its turning with speedcubing cubes.

How it differs from other Lee Windmills

Lee makes several 2x2 mods inspired by the Windmill Cube, and they are easy to mix up:

• Lee 2x2 Windmill Cube: the basic version, shaped like a Windmill Cube.
• Lee Crazy Windmill 2x2: a separate model in which the shape changes more dramatically after scrambling.
• Lee Ghost Windmill 2x2: combines the ideas of the Fisher Cube and the Windmill Cube. In the solved state, some pieces are blocked (bandaged).

To get started, the basic version described on this page is the best choice.
