Lee 2x2 Windmill Ghost Cube

Lee 2x2 Windmill Ghost Cube is a shape mod built on a standard 2x2 mechanism. Lee replaces the outer corner caps with 3D-printed parts. When solved, the puzzle has the shape of a 58 mm cube, but the caps are cut like those of a windmill cube. After the very first move it loses its cube shape, and once scrambled it looks like a random, asymmetrical lump of plastic.

How to solve the 2x2 ghost cube

Mechanically it is still a 2x2, so the algorithms and the method stay the same. What changes is how you recognize the pieces. The faces have no colors to tell you where a given corner belongs. You have to look at the shape and size of the caps and orient each piece so that you rebuild flat faces. A mirror cube works in a similar way, but here the irregular cuts make it easier to make a mistake when placing pieces. In the solved state some pieces are "bandaged", meaning the caps block certain moves. In that case, it is usually enough to start from a different layer.

Things to watch out for

This is a puzzle for relaxed solving and for your collection, not a cube for breaking records. Don't expect the turning of a modern speedcubing 2x2. Do not pry or force-turn the corners, as on 2x2 cubes this can break a piece. This applies especially to mods with printed caps. If something pops out while turning and you can put it back by hand, that is normal for this type of design.

Who is it for?

For people who have already mastered the regular 2x2 and 3x3 and want to try something different. It also works well as a next step after the mirror cube, before you take on the 3x3 ghost cube. Shape mod collectors will appreciate its unusual look. For a child's first cube, a classic 2x2 or 3x3 is a better choice.
