Lee 5x5 Double-Fisher Cube

A shape mod for those who no longer find a regular 5x5 challenging. The Lee 5x5 Double-Fisher Cube is also known as the Dual Fisher 5x5. It is made from a standard 5x5 cube with 3D-printed pieces glued on. The Fisher transformation has been applied twice here, on two axes. As a result, the solved cube shows a symmetrical pattern on its faces, and once scrambled it clearly changes shape. The body is black, and the colors come from stickers.

What Double-Fisher means

In a classic Fisher Cube, the cutting planes are rotated by 45 degrees around one axis. Because of this, the outer shape of a piece doesn't show what role it plays in the mechanism. In the Double-Fisher version, the same trick is repeated on a second axis. Inside, it is still a regular 5x5, so you solve it with the same method, e.g. reduction. Recognizing the pieces, however, is much harder. Pieces with the same function have different shapes, and during the solve the puzzle doesn't resemble a cube at all. Instead of muscle memory, what counts here is observation and calmly tracking the pieces.

How it turns

This is not a speedcubing cube. It has no magnets, so you have to align the layers yourself. If an inner layer is slightly misaligned, the next turn may lock up, which is why accurate turning works better here than high TPS. The added pieces make the cube bigger and change how it feels in your hands, but the turning itself is smooth. Keep in mind that this is a handmade mod, not a cube from a factory mold.

Who is it for?

For cubers who solve the 5x5 comfortably and want a challenge where thinking matters more than fast fingers. Shape mod collectors will like it too, as a solved Double-Fisher looks great on a shelf. As a first bigger cube or a gift for a child who is just learning the 3x3, a regular 5x5 is a better choice. This model is best saved for when 5x5 reduction no longer gives you trouble.
