Lee 5x5 Ghost Cube is a handmade shape mod. 3D-printed pieces are glued onto a standard 5x5 mechanism to change the shape of the cube. The cutting planes are offset, so in the solved state none of the layers lines up with the outer shape. A few turns are enough to transform the cube into an angular, irregular form. There are no colors to give you hints. You solve the Ghost Cube by shape alone, until it becomes a smooth cube again.

What makes it difficult

On a regular 5x5, the colors immediately show you where each piece belongs. Here you have to read it from the geometry of the pieces. Every piece is a different size, and the shape of the puzzle after a scramble tells you very little about where the solved state is. Knowing the reduction method helps, but it isn't enough. You also need piece recognition and plenty of spatial thinking. Shops rate this puzzle at the highest difficulty level. Users say it's one of the hardest things they've ever solved, and the first solve can take them weeks.

Turning and handling

Despite its large size, the cube turns lightly and smoothly. The base 5x5 mechanism handles the extended pieces well, and lockups happen about as often as you'd expect from a puzzle like this. The Ghost Cube has no magnets and is not meant for speedsolving. The larger pieces act as longer levers, so it's best to turn it calmly to avoid popping. Some users find the mechanism a bit loose and say the stickers on the pieces peel off easily. Keep this in mind if you solve it often.

Who is it for?

For an experienced cuber who can solve a 5x5 with ease and has already tackled simpler shape mods, e.g. the Mirror Cube or the 3x3 Ghost Cube. It's also a standout piece for any collection. The handmade build and unusual shape look great on a shelf. We don't recommend it as your first puzzle or your first shape mod.
