Lee Axis Cube 2x2x2

Lee Axis Cube 2x2x2 is a shape-shifting puzzle (shape mod). Inside, it runs on a regular 2x2 cube mechanism, with 3D-printed outer pieces mounted on top. These pieces have the shape known from Axis cubes, so after a few moves the puzzle no longer looks like a cube. This 2x2 series consists of Lee mods released together with Calvin's Puzzle. The cube has no magnets and comes with a black body.

How to solve it

Mechanically, it is a regular 2x2, so the same algorithms and the same method work here. The challenge lies elsewhere. The pieces have different shapes and sizes, so once scrambled, the puzzle looks chaotic and it is harder to tell which piece goes where. Every turn changes the silhouette a lot, which at first confuses even people who can solve a 2x2 without thinking. Solving it is mainly about training your eyes, not learning new algorithms.

The same series also includes the Fisher and Windmill versions. Fisher is considered the easiest of them, while Axis changes shape more and gives you more to think about.

Build quality

The outer pieces are 3D-printed and finished by hand, so the cube feels more like a collector's item than a mass-produced product. Turning is smooth, but this is not a cube for setting fast times. With no magnets and an unusual shape, it is meant for relaxed solving rather than high TPS. It also looks great on a shelf, both solved and scrambled.

Who is it for?

For people who can solve a 2x2 cube and want something different from yet another speed cube. Axis 2x2 is a great choice as your first shape mod, because you don't need to learn a new method. Shape mod collectors will enjoy it too. If you can't solve a regular 2x2 yet, start with a standard cube first, otherwise you may find it hard to get your bearings with this one.
