Lee Cylinder 2x2 Megaminx

Lee Cylinder 2x2 Megaminx is a shape-shifting puzzle from Lee. Underneath, it works like a 2x2 Megaminx, also known as a Kilominx, but on the outside it is shaped like a cylinder rather than a dodecahedron. This model is more of a collector's piece or a change from regular minxes than a puzzle for breaking records. At about 60 mm, it fits comfortably in your hand.

What kind of puzzle is it?

The Kilominx is the two-layer version of the Megaminx. It has 12 faces and 20 movable corners, with no visible centers or edges. The Cylinder uses the same turning axes, just with a different outer shape. The Megaminx cutting planes don't match the symmetry of a cylinder, so the pieces come in different shapes and sizes. After a few turns the puzzle no longer looks like a cylinder, and solving it means returning it to its original shape.

How to solve it

The moves and algorithms are the same as on a Kilominx. If you have solved a 2x2 Megaminx or a regular Megaminx, you don't need to learn a new method. The challenge lies elsewhere: when scrambled, the puzzle looks irregular and is harder to read. With shape-shifting puzzles, you need to keep track not only of the colors but also of which way the pieces are facing.

This is not a speedcube. With an irregularly shaped puzzle, calm and precise turning matters more than TPS. If you're looking for a fast Kilominx for timed practice, choose a classic dodecahedron-shaped model.

Who is it for?

For those who already know the Megaminx or Kilominx and want a new challenge, as well as for collectors of unusual puzzles and shape mods. For a first puzzle, including for a child, it's better to choose a classic 2x2 or 3x3 cube and come back to this model once you've mastered the basics.
