Lee Grenade Puzzle

Lee Grenade Puzzle is a shape mod built on a Skewb mechanism. 3D-printed caps have been added to the pieces, turning the cube into a barrel-shaped or grenade-shaped puzzle, which is where its name comes from. The version available in our shop has a black body.

How it works

Inside is a regular Skewb, so the moves are the same as on a Skewb: every turn cuts through the center of the puzzle and rotates half of it around a corner axis. The difference shows up once you scramble it. The caps have different shapes, so the Grenade loses its symmetrical form and looks like a jumble of protruding pieces. That is also why we list it in our shape-shifting puzzles category. If you know a Skewb method, you have a good starting point, but solving this puzzle also means keeping track of the shape, not just the colors.

What to keep in mind

According to distributors' descriptions, the Grenade turns smoothly. Based on the available information, it has no magnets. It is a collector's puzzle, not a speedsolving puzzle, so there is no point comparing it with speedcubing Skewbs.

The caps are 3D-printed, so their surface is not as smooth as on cubes made of injection-molded plastic. One user wrote that some stickers did not stick very well and that caps fell off while solving. Minor issues like these can usually be fixed with a drop of glue. When putting a cap back on, however, pay attention to which way it is oriented.

Who is it for?

The Grenade is best for people who can already solve a Skewb or a 3x3 cube and are looking for something unusual for their collection. The mechanism itself is not difficult, but a shape mod can be quite a challenge without some experience. As a gift for a younger child who is just starting out with puzzles, a regular Skewb is a better choice.
