MF8 3-Layer Rhombic Dodecahedron Cube Standard DodeRhombus

MF8 Standard DodeRhombus is a rhombic dodecahedron: the puzzle has 12 rhombus-shaped faces and is face turning. It is the mass-produced version of the DodeRhombus Plus design by "El Cubitero" (the designer's pseudonym). What sets it apart from a regular rhombic dodecahedron is its split edges. They make the puzzle jumbling: in some positions you can turn a face even though the pieces have not returned to their original places yet. This version has a black body.

What makes it challenging

After a few jumbling moves, pieces of different sizes end up in places that are not their own, and the puzzle starts to look different. Getting out of that state is usually the hardest part. The mechanism is not fully unrestricted. When a large corner sits where a small one belongs, some faces lock up and you have to look for another move. The algorithms are fairly rhythmic, though. If you already solve jumbling puzzles (e.g. from the Curvy Copter family), you will find your way around faster. There are tutorials for this model on YouTube.

How it turns

Buyers agree that it is solidly built and has no popping issues. Straight out of the box, it often turns tight and rather scratchy. After loosening the screws (under the caps) and adding a drop of lube, it turns noticeably smoother. It is large enough that your hands won't get tired during longer solves.

Standard or Crazy?

MF8 has also released a Crazy DodeRhombus version. It has a circle in the centre of each face that sometimes turns with the face and sometimes stays in place. This adds an extra layer of difficulty. The Standard version has no circles. For your first jumbling rhombic dodecahedron, it is the more sensible choice.

Who is it for?

For collectors and anyone who enjoys puzzles outside the official WCA events and doesn't mind spending longer searching for a solution. This is not a speedcubing cube, nor a good gift for a beginner. Without knowing at least the 3x3 cube and the basics of building your own algorithms (or using tutorials), it is easy to get stuck.
