MF8 3x4x5 Full-Functional

This cuboid was designed by Tom van der Zanden, known in the puzzle community as TomZ. The first copies were 3D prints, and MF8 later put it into mass production. The MF8 3x4x5 Full-Functional has 3 layers in one direction, 4 in the second and 5 in the third. As a result, each pair of opposite faces has a different size: 3x4, 3x5 and 4x5. The body is black.

What does "Full-Functional" mean?

In simpler cuboids, the non-square faces can only be turned by 180 degrees. Here, every face can be turned by 90 degrees. This kind of move changes the shape of the puzzle, so the 3x4x5 is also a shapeshifting puzzle. Solving it is a two-part task: first you restore the cuboid shape, then you sort the colors so that each face is a single color. Puzzle Master rates this puzzle at level 9 on its difficulty scale and calls it "Gruelling".

How does it turn?

Buyers report that the puzzle turns smoothly right out of the box. However, it is not a cube for speedsolving. Aggressive turning can cause popping, so it is safer to turn it calmly and precisely. Some people report that in certain positions the two outer layers along the longer side lock together, even when the puzzle is already in the correct shape. Cubers call this kind of layer locking bandaging. You should also expect parity on the 4x5 faces. To solve it, you need algorithms known from cuboids such as the 3x3x4, and a deliberate move through a different shape of the puzzle.

Who is it for?

For those who have already mastered typical cuboids, such as the 2x2x3, 3x3x2, 3x3x4 or 2x3x4, and want something noticeably harder. It is also a great addition to a collection of shapeshifting puzzles. It is not really suitable as a first puzzle or as a gift for a child who is just learning the 3x3.
