MF8 Crazy Octahedron I

This is an eight-sided face-turning puzzle, meaning you turn entire faces. It has one modification that makes a big difference when solving: in the middle of each face there is a circle that, by default, does not turn together with the face. MF8 Crazy Octahedron I is the first version in MF8's Crazy Octahedron series. Each circle consists of 6 pieces and has no centre piece.

What makes it "crazy"

When you turn a face, the outer pieces move while the circle in its middle stays in place. As a result, parts of the circles travel to the neighbouring faces differently than on a regular octahedron. Algorithms you know from the classic FTO will cover part of the solve, but for the circles you will need to find your own sequences or adapt the ones you know.

In the Crazy series this works in two settings. In setting 0 the circle does not turn with the face (this is the factory setting), and in setting 1 it turns together with it. You can change the setting, but it requires partially disassembling the puzzle. It cannot be switched "on the fly" like the tension on a speedcubing cube.

How it turns

This is a puzzle for relaxed solving, not for setting fast times. According to user reviews, pieces catch fairly often while turning (catching), and corner cutting is very limited. It is best to turn precisely and all the way, without fast turning.

Version I, II or III?

• Crazy Octahedron I has circles made of 6 pieces and no centres.
• Crazy Octahedron II has circles made of 7 pieces and a centre on each face.
• Crazy Octahedron III also has 7 pieces in each circle and centres, but a deeper cut, so the centre also moves with every face turn.

Who is it for?

It is a good choice if you can already solve the Face Turning Octahedron or other octahedra and want something more challenging, and also for collectors of MF8 puzzles. We do not recommend it as a first puzzle or as a gift for a child who is just learning to solve the 3x3 cube.
