MF8 Unicorn Cube 3x3

At first glance, the MF8 Unicorn Cube looks like an ordinary 3x3 cube. However, it has extra cuts that let you turn four of the corners separately. Each of these corners turns together with parts of three edges and three centers. This shape mod combines regular 3x3 moves with the corner turns known from the Dino Cube. Together, the two types of moves scramble the puzzle very quickly, much faster than a classic cube.

How to solve the Unicorn Cube

A standard 3x3 method is not enough for this puzzle. You need to handle the pieces split by the corner turns separately and plan the order of your moves. Solving is slower and takes more setup moves than on a speedcube. You should also be prepared for a situation known as "Unicorn parity", which means a single twisted corner at the end of the solve. The easiest way to learn how to deal with it is with a step-by-step tutorial.

This is not a cube for setting fast times. The MF8 mechanism from that era can't match today's magnetic cubes. Straight out of the box, the turning can be stiff and catching may occur. At first, turn gently and align the layers carefully, because forceful turning easily leads to lockups. Over time, and after lubing, the cube usually turns more smoothly.

Unicorn or Crazy Unicorn?

MF8 also offers a Crazy Unicorn version. The corner mechanics are the same, but each face also has a round piece that stays in place. This makes the puzzle even more challenging. If this is your first time with this design, it's better to start with the regular Unicorn and save the Crazy version for later.

For anyone who can comfortably solve a 3x3 and is looking for a new puzzle that makes you think rather than just turn fast. The Unicorn is also a great addition to a puzzle collection. For a child who is only just learning to solve, it's better to buy a classic 3x3 cube first.
