The MF8 Curvy Copter III is a harder version of the Curvy Copter with deeper cuts that make the centres move as well. It supports jumbling, and you need commutators to solve the centres. It measures 60 mm and weighs 133 g. Stickerless bright version, no magnets.
MF8 introduced this puzzle at the end of 2014 as the third version of the Curvy Copter. The MF8 Curvy Copter III is an edge-turning puzzle, which means it turns around its edges rather than its faces. Compared with the original, it has deeper cuts that pass through the centres of the faces. As a result, the centres and the small pieces around them (the so-called petals), which stay fixed in the classic Curvy Copter, also take part in solving. Our version is stickerless bright, meaning coloured plastic with no stickers.
The corners, edges and pentagonal pieces work just like in the original. What's new are the moving centres and petals. Because of them, you can no longer solve the puzzle purely by intuition, as people often do with the first Curvy Copter. For the centres you need commutators, short sequences that swap a few pieces without disturbing the rest of the puzzle. If you solve the 3x3 cube with the beginner's method, you already use a simple commutator, so the idea won't be completely new to you.
Like its predecessor, the Curvy Copter III supports jumbling. If you turn a layer by part of a move, the cutting planes line up so that pieces can be moved out of their usual positions. This is a second, noticeably harder level of play. You can scramble and solve the puzzle without jumbling or use it on purpose.
For those who already know the Skewb, the Helicopter Cube or the basic Curvy Copter and are looking for another, more challenging edge-turner. It's a puzzle for relaxed solving and for your collection, not a cube for setting fast times. For your first unusual puzzle, a simpler model is a better choice. The puzzle has no magnets. It contains small parts, so it is not intended for children under 7.
