MF8 Curvy Starminx

MF8 Curvy Starminx is a dodecahedral puzzle from the Minx family, so it has the same shape as a Megaminx. The difference is that on each of the 12 faces, curved cuts form a star. It is a face-turning puzzle, like the MF8 Starminx II, but the curved cuts divide each face into more pieces. The body is black and the puzzle measures approx. 105 mm.

How it differs from the Megaminx

From the outside it is the same dodecahedron, but solving it is a completely different experience. The star on each face adds quite a few extra pieces that you can't place using Megaminx algorithms alone. You will need plenty of setup moves and close attention to move order. People who have solved the Curvy Starminx say it is clearly harder than the Megaminx and even the Gigaminx. So this is a puzzle for long, relaxed solving sessions, not a cube for speedsolving.

How it turns

Like most MF8 puzzles, the Curvy Starminx is not a speed cube and should be turned calmly. User opinions on the mechanism vary. Some people praise the smooth turning straight out of the box and note that it turns even better after lubing. Others point out catching. The most common issue is popping: if you turn too fast or imprecisely, a corner cap can come off its mount. It helps to make sure each layer is properly aligned before the next move, and to add a little lube.

Who is it for?

For collectors and people who have already solved the Megaminx (ideally a few other Minx-type puzzles too) and want something significantly harder. It is a bad choice as a first puzzle or as a gift for a child who is just starting out. It's better to begin with a classic Megaminx and come back to the Curvy Starminx later.
