MF8 Double Crazy Cube

MF8 Double Crazy Cube is an extended version of the 3x3 crazy cube. Each face has two concentric circles, which form two rotating rings around the center. From the outside it looks like a regular 3x3, but each pair of opposite faces behaves differently, so the algorithms you already know are no longer enough. The puzzle was designed by Zijian Wang and is made by MF8. We stock the Black version.

How the rings work

Each pair of faces determines what happens to the rings when you turn a face:

• red and orange faces: when you turn the face, the inner circle stays in place,
• white and yellow faces: both rings turn together with the face,
• green and blue faces: both rings stay in place.

In theory, two circles would allow four types of moves. The designer kept three, because he considered the fourth too difficult to build into the mechanism. In practice, you have to solve both the outer layer and the rings. You also need to watch out for incorrectly rotated pieces and turn them back, which you never do on a regular 3x3.

Turning and quality

This is a puzzle, not a speed cube. It has no magnets, and turning is noticeably heavier than on a typical magnetic cube. Lockups can occur around the rings, and corner cutting is very limited. The mechanism has screws that let you adjust the tension slightly. According to customer reviews, the build quality falls short of what you may be used to from modern speedcubing cubes. This cube is not legal for official competitions.

Who is it for?

For cubers who can confidently solve a 3x3 and are looking for a new challenge. It will also appeal to those who already own a regular Crazy 3x3 and want something harder, as well as to collectors of shape-shifting and unusual puzzles. For a child's first cube or for learning to solve, a classic 3x3 is a better choice.
