MF8 Sun Cube Bandaged is a shape mod puzzle built on a 3x3 mechanism. Each face has an octagonal center surrounded by pieces that together resemble a sun. The key difference from a regular cube is that the layers turn not only by 90 degrees but also by 45 degrees. After such a move the cube loses its cubic shape, which is why it belongs in our shape-shifting puzzles category. In our shop this version comes with a black body (Black).

How the Sun Cube works

As long as you only make 90-degree turns, the cube behaves like a regular 3x3. The real puzzle begins with 45-degree moves. The pieces then move between positions that don't exist on a classic cube. The mechanism is derived from David Pitcher's Octo Cube. In some positions bandaging comes into play, meaning that joined pieces block certain moves. So you have to plan the order of your turns instead of just repeating algorithms you know from the 3x3.

The Bandaged version is a separate model in the mf8 catalog, different from the standard Sun Cube. Each face has partial cuts that block some of the turns possible on the regular Sun Cube. This gives it less freedom of movement and calls for a different approach to solving. If you already know the basic Sun Cube, this can be your next challenge.

What to expect

This is not a speedcubing puzzle and shouldn't be judged by TPS or corner cutting. Owners of the standard Sun Cube point out that it is quite stiff at first and only turns more smoothly after a few solves. Catching can happen on 45-degree moves, while popping is rare. With puzzles of this design, it's best to turn calmly and align the layers carefully before the next move.

For collectors and anyone who enjoys unusual puzzles, can solve a 3x3 without instructions and is now looking for something that requires figuring things out on their own. For a child's first cube, or even for your first shape mod, a simpler puzzle is a better choice.
