MF8 Trapezoid Dodecahedron Cube Standard DodeRhombus is a twelve-sided shape-shifting puzzle from MF8's DodeRhombus series, in black. It is a jumbling puzzle: not every turn returns it to its original shape, so after a few moves the puzzle looks different than it did at the start. Solving it takes thinking above all, not fast fingers.

What makes it difficult

On a classic cube, every full-step turn leaves the shape unchanged. Jumbling puzzles also allow turns that move pieces into different positions and change the shape. Scrambling is easy, but getting from a "jumbled" state back to a regular shape is a challenge of its own. Only then does the actual colour solving begin. People who have solved puzzles from this series agree that the hardest part is getting out of the jumbled state. Understanding the mechanism and working out your own setups helps a lot here. Standard 3x3 algorithms won't help much.

Standard or Crazy version?

MF8 makes DodeRhombus puzzles in two variants. In the Crazy version, each face has a circle in the middle. Some of these circles turn with the face and some stay in place, which adds another layer of difficulty. The Standard version has no circles, so it's a sensible starting point before you move on to the Crazy variant.

Build and turning

The puzzle measures approx. 105 mm and weighs approx. 310 g, so it is noticeably bigger and heavier than a 3x3 cube. In reviews of models from this series, users praise the solid construction and the fact that they turn well right out of the box. However, this is not a speedcubing puzzle. Turning is calm and focused on control rather than TPS.

Who is it for?

For cubers who can already solve a Megaminx, Skewb or other unusual puzzles and want to try shape-shifting puzzles. It also works well as a display piece in a collection. As a first puzzle for a child or for someone still learning the 3x3 cube, it will most likely be too difficult.
