MF8 Elite Skewb – a 4-layer Skewb

MF8 Elite Skewb is a Skewb with four layers on each axis of rotation. The classic Skewb has two layers, the Master Skewb has three, and the Elite adds one more. Shops sometimes list this model as "True 4 layer Skewb" or "Skewb 7x7". It moves on the same principle as a regular Skewb (turns around the corners), but it takes much longer to solve. We stock it with a black body and stickers.

How it turns

User reviews suggest that for such a complex mechanism the Elite Skewb turns reasonably well, but it is far from the smoothness of good speedcubing puzzles. The outer layers are usually noticeably stiffer than the inner ones. Catching can happen, especially when the layers are not aligned precisely. Ziicube openly warns that the puzzle can jam. Some people also mention slightly sharp edges on certain pieces. Don't loosen the tension too much, because looser settings increase the risk of popping. This is a puzzle for relaxed solving, not for setting times.

How do you solve it?

The Elite Skewb is usually solved with the reduction method. First you group the pieces so that the puzzle behaves like a Master Skewb, then you finish it like a Master Skewb. It's a similar approach to 4x4 and larger cubes, which are reduced to a 3x3. In practice, the Elite is easiest to tackle once you can already solve the Master Skewb.

Who is it for?

For collectors and for people who know the Skewb and Master Skewb well and want to move on to the next, harder stage. For your first Skewb, the classic 2-layer version is a better choice. The manufacturer marks the puzzle as not suitable for children under 7 because of small parts.
