A Chinese twisty puzzle manufacturer that grew out of the China Cube Club forum. Best known for unconventional puzzles such as the Super Square-1, Bauhinia Dodecahedron, Bermuda Megaminx and the Crazy series. It has also made a well-regarded Square-1 and Megaminx.
The MF8 brand grew out of the Chinese forum 中国魔方俱乐部 (China Cube Club). The forum has been running since 2005 and is one of the largest cubing communities in China. Besides running the forum, MF8 designs and manufactures puzzles under its own brand. It is best known for unconventional puzzles: ones with extra cuts, unusual shapes and mechanisms that can't be solved with the methods you know from the 3x3.
The manufacturer has been releasing its puzzles since 2007. Its first model was the Square-1, which went through several versions, up to V3. For years, the MF8 Square-1 and Megaminx had a good reputation among cubers. The large minxes come from the same family: Gigaminx, Teraminx and Petaminx.
The most recognisable designs, however, are the ones outside the standard range: the Super Square-1 with extra layers, Bauhinia Dodecahedron, Bermuda Megaminx, Helicopter Dodecahedron, Curvy Copter III and the Crazy series. MF8 also works with puzzle designers. Thanks to this, puzzles such as Oskar van Deventer's Icosaix and More Madness, the Pentagram designed together with Eric Vergo, and the DeCETH, released together with Greg, made it into mass production.
MF8 doesn't make speedcubes. Its puzzles aren't compared by TPS or tension settings, but by how interesting the mechanism is and how much thinking it takes to solve them. They'll be the most fun for people who can already solve a 3x3 confidently and are looking for a new challenge, as well as for collectors of unusual puzzles. With many models you'll need to work out your own method or adapt known algorithms. For a child's first cube, a classic 3x3 is the better choice; reach for MF8 once the basics are mastered.
