MoFangGe 4x4 Pyraminx (Master Pyraminx)

The MoFangGe 4x4 Pyraminx, also known as the Master Pyraminx, is a bigger version of the classic Pyraminx. Instead of three layers on each axis, it has four. It is made by QiYi under the MoFangGe brand and has been on the market since 2018. The pyramid shape stays the same, but solving it is a completely different experience. There are more pieces, and before you finish the solve you need to pair up the edges. It is a similar step to the one on a 4x4 cube, when you reduce it to a 3x3.

How it turns

This is one of the most frequently recommended Master Pyraminx puzzles. It is well made and causes no trouble while solving. It turns smoothly and stays stable at the same time. Reviews often mention a noticeable, slightly "clicky" mechanism that holds the layers in place. The puzzle has no magnets, so its feel can't match modern magnetic Pyraminxes. With a puzzle of this type, however, that matters much less than with competition cubes.

Some units come heavily lubed from the factory, so at first they may feel heavy and "sticky". Loosening the tension a little and wiping excess lube off the pieces usually helps.

Adjustment

You change the tension with adjustment screws. With a looser setting, the puzzle turns faster and is more forgiving of imprecise moves. With a tighter setting, it is more controllable and accidental layer turns are less likely.

Who is it for?

For people who already know the regular Pyraminx or solve the 3x3 and are looking for a new challenge. If you can solve a standard Pyraminx, you will get the hang of the Master Pyraminx fairly quickly. Keep in mind that the Master Pyraminx is not a WCA event. It is a puzzle for your collection and for fun, not for official competitions. As a child's first puzzle, the classic Pyraminx is a better choice.

Colour versions

There are two versions to choose from: Black, with stickers on black plastic, and Stickerless Bright, with coloured plastic and no stickers. The mechanism is the same in both. The stickerless version has no stickers that could wear off or peel.
