The MoYu Evil Eye I is a rhombic dodecahedron puzzle based on the Cross Cube mechanism, a 3x3 with an extra layer on each side. In the Close Eye version the inner 3x3 is completely covered, which makes it the easier of the two Evil Eye models. Experience with bigger cubes will come in handy.
MoYu Evil Eye I (also known as MoYan I or the Close Eye version) is a twisty puzzle shaped like a rhombic dodecahedron, a solid with 12 rhombus-shaped faces. MoYu released it in 2013. On the shelf it looks nothing like a cube, but inside it runs a Cross Cube mechanism, which you can think of as a 3x3 with an extra layer on each side or as a 5x5 without edges and corners. This version comes in Black.
The layers turn just like on a cube, so the moves quickly become intuitive. The challenge is that the unusual shape hides the familiar arrangement of the pieces. In version I the inner 3x3 is completely covered, so you only solve the pieces visible on the surface. You still need a good understanding of how they move relative to each other. Experience with bigger cubes helps a lot, especially solving centers on a 5x5. This is a puzzle for working things out at your own pace, not for chasing times.
Both models have the same shape and mechanism. The difference is in the faces. On the Evil Eye II (Open Eye), each of the 12 faces has an opening, the "eye" of the name, through which you can see the edges of the inner 3x3. This adds more pieces to solve, so version II is harder. The Evil Eye I is a sensible first step if you want to get to know this mechanism before taking on the "open eye".
For cubers who can already solve a 3x3, ideally bigger cubes too, and want something different from yet another classic NxN. It also makes an interesting addition to a collection of unusually shaped puzzles. For a child who is just learning to solve a cube, it will most likely be too difficult.
