MoYu MeiLong 12x12x12

MoYu MeiLong 12x12x12 is a non-magnetic 12x12 cube released by MoYu in 2019 under the MoFang JiaoShi (MFJS) brand. It is one of the largest mass-produced cubes. It has a full cube shape rather than the rounded, "pillowed" shape of many older big cubes. It comes in one colour variant, stickerless bright, with vivid colours and no stickers.

Construction

The mechanism has several layers, similar to other large MFJS cubes. The edges and centres are held at different levels inside the cube. The centres have a triple-layer design, which helps keep such a large cube stable. With 12 layers packed into 93 mm, the individual pieces are very thin, so handle them with care.

How it turns

According to user reviews, the MeiLong 12x12 turns smoothly and lightly for its size, right out of the box. Popping happens mainly during fast, imprecise turning. Before you turn the inner layers, it is a good idea to align the cube, because turning misaligned layers can crack the thin pieces. Tension is adjusted with adjustment screws. On a cube this size, this lets you set the play of the mechanism to suit your own style.

The weight of approx. 514 g is noticeable, especially during long solves. This is a cube for calm, methodical solving rather than racing for TPS.

First generation vs. newer versions

MoYu later released further versions of the MeiLong 12x12. They are noticeably smaller (approx. 75 mm) and much lighter, and one of them is also magnetic. The model described here is the first, larger and heavier non-magnetic generation. It is a better fit if you prefer bigger pieces under your fingers or are building a collection of NxN cubes.

Who is it for?

For experienced cubers who can already solve big cubes (centre reduction and edge pairing), and for collectors. 12x12 is not an official WCA event. This model is not suitable as a first cube, including for a child.
