MoYu Meilong Ivy Skewb

After the Polaris, MoFangJiaoShi, a sub-brand of MoYu, released a second skewb modification in the MeiLong series. From the outside, the MoYu MeiLong Ivy Skewb looks like an ordinary 56.5 mm cube. Inside, however, it has a mechanism that lets you make moves that are impossible on a classic skewb. The puzzle came out in 2020 and is available in a stickerless bright version.

Ivy Skewb vs. a regular skewb and the Polaris

On the Polaris, you first have to align the rotating corners to unlock the skewb moves. The Ivy works differently. In cube shape, you make normal skewb moves, and the extra options appear during a turn: if you stop a skewb move halfway, you can rotate the centers. This lets you scramble the puzzle more deeply than a standard skewb. Knowing a skewb method will help, but you also need to understand how the extra rotations behave.

How it turns

Turning is light and very smooth. However, the design is much more complex than a regular skewb, so turning takes a fair amount of precision. The Ivy is not suited to aggressive speed turning. It's better to turn calmly and align the layers carefully before the next move. Tension is set with adjustment screws, so you can loosen or tighten the mechanism a little to suit your preferences.

Who is it for?

The Ivy is for people who can already solve a skewb and are looking for a harder variant of this puzzle, as well as for collectors of unusual modifications. It is not allowed in official competitions, because it is a modification and not a standard skewb from the WCA event. For a first puzzle of this type, including for a child, a classic skewb is a better choice.
