MoYu Meilong M Pyraminx

A magnetic pyraminx from the budget Meilong series, which MoYu sells under the MoFangJiaoShi (Cubing Classroom) brand. The MoYu Meilong M Pyraminx comes with factory-installed magnets, matte frosted plastic and screw adjustment. It's an affordable pyraminx for learning this event. You don't need to add or modify anything to start solving on it.

How it turns

The puzzle feels stable and solid in the hand. The magnets give a noticeable "click" and help the layers settle into place, so it's easier to avoid incomplete turns. Out of the box, the Meilong M is usually dry and fairly stiff. A few drops of light silicone lube make the turning noticeably smoother. Corner cutting is average, which is no surprise in this price range. This isn't a pyraminx that forgives very imprecise turning.

Tip mounting system

The most distinctive feature of this model is the way the tips are attached. The tips are not magnetic. They are held in place by plastic tabs on the centers that fit into grooves in the tips. This simple solution keeps the tips from popping off accidentally, and it doesn't get in the way when you take the puzzle apart to adjust it. Keep in mind, however, that the tips turn rather stiffly and can stop halfway during a quick, light flick.

Adjustment

Tension is set with screws. A looser setting makes the puzzle faster, while tighter screws give more control and stability. Together with lubing, this is more than enough to tune the Meilong M to your own style.

Who is it for?

For anyone starting out with pyraminx, and for parents looking for a good, inexpensive puzzle for their child. It's legal for official competitions, so it's also suitable for your first competitions. If you're already good at pyraminx and chasing faster times, a higher-end model with magnetic tips will serve you better. The Meilong series also has a newer Pyraminx V2 M version, which is lighter and has a different design. This description refers to the first version of the Meilong M.
