MoYu MeiLong Mastermorphix is a 3x3 shape mod. Inside, it runs on a standard 3x3 mechanism, but on the outside the puzzle is shaped like a tetrahedron with rounded faces. It has only four colors, one for each face. This version is stickerless in bright colors, so there are no stickers that could wear off or peel. The model was released in 2019 as part of the budget MeiLong series.

How to solve it

The pieces have different shapes and sizes, so after a few moves the Mastermorphix loses its original form and starts to look like a shapeless blob. If you know a 3x3 method, you can solve this one too, but with this puzzle the shape of the pieces matters, not just the color. With only four colors, several pieces share the same color, and you have to tell them apart by their geometry. That's why even an experienced cuber usually has to stop and think during the first few solves.

The cube comes factory lubed and turns smoothly right out of the box. Users say that for a shape mod it turns well, has a smooth feel and doesn't get many lockups. It is not a cube for chasing TPS, though. It has no magnets, and the rounded shape doesn't sit in your hands as securely as a regular 3x3 cube. You get this one for the puzzle itself, not for breaking time records.

Adjustment

Tension is set with adjustment screws. If the layers feel too loose or too tight, you can tighten or loosen them and tune the cube to your turning style.

Who is it for?

For a cuber who can already solve a 3x3 and wants to try something different. The Mastermorphix works well as a first shape mod, because it is based on a familiar mechanism, yet solving it still takes some thought. It's also a good gift idea for a child who can already solve a regular cube. The MeiLong series is budget-friendly, so this experiment won't cost much. The Mastermorphix is not a WCA event, so it won't be useful at competitions.
