MoYu MeiLong Mixup Skewb

MoYu MeiLong Mixup Skewb looks like a regular skewb from a distance. You only notice the difference on the centers, because each of them has extra, smaller pieces. When you make a partial turn and the cuts line up, these pieces can move to the neighboring centers. That means it is no longer enough to solve the corners and centers as on a classic skewb. You also have to sort out the mixed-up center pieces, and in some versions restore the puzzle's shape as well. The puzzle was released in 2020 under the MeiLong brand, MoYu's budget sub-brand.

Three versions: #1, #2 and #3

All versions share the same skewb mechanism. They differ in how the centers are divided and, as a result, in difficulty:

• #1: each center has one semicircular piece that can swap with the others. This is the easiest version and a good start if a regular skewb is no longer a challenge for you.
• #2: each center is split into two parts. Here, swapping pieces can already change the shape of the puzzle.
• #3: the centers are split into three parts. It has the most pieces, so solving it takes the most figuring out.

How it turns

Turning is smooth right out of the box and usually free of catches. Buyers point out that it turns well for a puzzle outside the official events, and the center pieces swap without trouble. However, be aware that popping can happen, meaning corners can fall out, and in version #3 also the small center pieces. They are usually easy to put back in. Tension can be adjusted with screws, which helps reduce this problem somewhat.

Who is it for?

The Mixup Skewb is a great fit if you can already solve a regular skewb and are looking for something harder, and also for shape mod collectors. If you are just starting out, solve a classic skewb first, then move on to version #1. The puzzle is not allowed in WCA competitions, so you buy it for fun and challenge, not for training for official events.
