MoYu MeiLong Polaris Skewb

MoYu MeiLong Polaris is a skewb shape mod from the MeiLong series. The series belongs to MoFangJiaoShi (Cubing Classroom), a MoYu brand. Underneath, it runs on a regular skewb mechanism, but on the outside the Polaris has rotating corners and notches in the centers. Next to the corners there are extra pieces that move together with the centers. As a result, the puzzle looks and behaves completely differently from a classic skewb.

How the Polaris works

Most puzzles can be turned straight out of the box. Not the Polaris. In its cube shape you can't make a full turn, because you first need to rotate the corners by 60°. Only then does the skewb mechanism unlock, and you can scramble the puzzle as usual.

The corners rotate independently of the rest, so after a few moves the puzzle changes shape dramatically. You have to keep track not only of the colors but also of the corner positions. If you already know how to solve a skewb, you have a good starting point, but a skewb method alone won't be enough. You'll also need to figure out corner orientation and how to return the puzzle to its cube shape.

Turning and build

Turning is smooth, with practically no catches. The Polaris is stickerless and made of colored plastic in the Stickerless Bright version. Tension can be adjusted with screws.

Who is it for?

For people who can already solve a skewb and want a harder variant, and for collectors of unusual puzzles. It's a puzzle for fun and for your collection, not a competition cube. The Polaris is not an official WCA event. As a first puzzle for a beginner, a regular skewb is a better choice. The Polaris introduces several new rules at once and may be discouraging.
