MoYu MeiLong Pyraminx

A budget pyraminx from MoFangJiaoShi (Cubing Classroom), the budget brand associated with MoYu. It was the first Pyraminx in the MeiLong line, which is designed for beginners. The MoYu MeiLong Pyraminx is the non-magnetic version released in 2019. It has frosted plastic and vivid colors, and it is legal for official competitions.

Design

The mechanism is similar to the MoYu Magnetic Pyraminx, but without magnets. The side surfaces of the edges have raised tracks, so the edges touch the centers over a smaller area. The inside of the centers is made of black plastic, chosen to give the mechanism the right feel. Stability comes from simple plastic bumps. They stop in small dimples at the base of the edges and help each layer settle into place instead of magnets. Tension is set with adjustment screws.

How it turns

The puzzle turns very lightly and corner cutting is good. Without magnets, the layers don't snap into place on their own, so when turning faster you need to pay more attention to the accuracy of your moves. Compared with the magnetic MeiLong versions, turning is slower and less precise. For learning and relaxed solving, however, this is not a problem. The frosted surface offers medium grip.

Non-magnetic or magnetic?

The MeiLong series also includes magnetic versions: the MeiLong Pyraminx M and the newer MeiLong Pyraminx V2. Magnets make the layers clearly "click" into place, which makes control easier at higher TPS. This model is the simplest in the whole series. If you're just checking whether you'll enjoy the Pyraminx, the non-magnetic version is all you need. If you want to train for speed, you'll find a magnetic version easier.

Who is it for?

It's a good first pyraminx for a beginner or a child learning to solve the Pyraminx. It also works well as a spare or travel puzzle for someone who already has a magnetic model. Available versions: Black, Stickerless Bright, Bright/Black and Macaron.
