The MoYu MeiLong Pyraminx Duo has only 4 corners and 4 face centers, so it is much easier to solve than a regular Pyraminx. From any scramble, it returns to the solved state in at most 4 moves. This is the standard non-magnetic version with matte plastic and tension adjustment. A great choice as a first puzzle and a nice addition to your collection.
The MoYu MeiLong Pyraminx Duo is a new edition of the Pyraminx Duo puzzle in the MeiLong series. The series is made by Cubing Classroom (MFJS), MoYu's brand of more affordable puzzles for beginners. MoYu had already released a Pyraminx Duo, developed together with Meffert's. The new version has a dual adjustment system. It looks like a regular Pyraminx, but it works differently and is much easier to solve. That makes it a great choice for your first puzzle that isn't a cube.
The idea came from Rob Stegmann, and Oskar van Deventer built the working mechanism. The puzzle has only 4 corners and 4 face centers. There are no edges and no separate tips. You turn it by the corners. Each move twists one corner and moves the three face centers around it, which pass underneath the corner. The mechanism works similarly to a Skewb.
The Pyraminx Duo has only 324 possible positions. From any of them you can get back to the solved state in at most 4 moves. Many people solve it intuitively, without algorithms. Popular tutorials rely on a single short algorithm. It is not a WCA event, so this model is not intended for competition training.
This is the standard version: no magnets and no Ball-Core. The plastic has a matte (frosted) finish and the corners are rounded, so the puzzle sits comfortably in your hand. The design is protected against pops. You can adjust the tension to make turning looser or tighter. Without magnets, the layers don't snap into place on their own, so you need to turn a bit more precisely. With such a simple puzzle, however, this doesn't get in the way of solving.
There is also a magnetic version with Ball-Core. It offers more stability and distinct "clicks" when the layers align. For learning and casual solving, though, the non-magnetic version is all you need.
For a child or adult who is just getting started with puzzles, and for parents looking for a simple gift. Speedcubers like to add the Duo to their collection or use it for a quick warm-up. If you want to train Pyraminx for competitions, you need the classic model with tips.
