MoYu RS3M 2020 UV 3x3

MoYu RS3M UV 3x3x3 is the well-known RS3M 2020, a budget magnetic 3x3 cube that has been recommended for years as the first decent cube for speedcubing. In 2023, MoYu released it with a UV coating. The mechanism hasn't changed. The difference is the surface: instead of matte (frosted) plastic, the cube has a glossy, smooth finish that gives a better grip. In our shop it is available in the Stickerless Bright colour scheme.

How it turns

The RS3M 2020 is fast, light to turn and has a crispy feel. Reviewers praise it above all for its corner cutting, which is very good for this price range, and its reverse corner cutting is decent too. Straight out of the box, the cube can be dry and fairly loud. You can also hear the springs, but lubing it usually solves this. Some users of the UV version feel that the magnets are slightly stronger than in the regular RS3M 2020. This is their subjective impression; the manufacturer does not mention any such change.

Tension adjustment

The cube uses classic springs, with no MagLev and no magnets in the core. Instead, it has a dual adjustment system: you adjust spring tension and compression separately (9 levels). Settings are changed with the included tool, not by hand. This kind of adjustment isn't a given in a cheaper cube, and it lets you set it looser for speed or tighter for control.

UV or standard version?

In terms of performance, both versions are practically the same. The UV coating makes sense if you like a stronger grip, especially with sweaty hands. It also helps if you don't want the surface to become shiny over time, as frosted plastic tends to. If the lowest price matters most, the regular RS3M 2020 gives you the same mechanism. The newer RS3M V5 and Super RS3M are different designs, not just different finishes.

Who is it for?

For people starting out in speedcubing or upgrading from their first non-magnetic cube who want a proven design with adjustment options. It also works well as an inexpensive backup cube for cubers who prefer a UV surface. If you're looking for core magnets or MagLev, check out other versions in the RS3M series.
